Name: Rhamnus cathartica Ruderal Shrubland
Reference: NatureServe Biotics 2019
Description: This non-native invasive shrubland is widespread throughout the northeastern and midwestern United States. It tends to form dense, often even-aged thickets, crowding and shading out native shrubs and herbs. In an open site, Rhamnus cathartica establishment is followed by lateral crown spread. This extension continues until branches touch adjacent shrubs. The large leaves and continuous canopy create dense shade. Even-aged thickets are common in both wetlands and in woodland understories. In fire-adapted ecosystems, the lack of vegetation under buckthorn prohibits fires.
