Name: Tsuga heterophylla - Abies amabilis - (Pseudotsuga menziesii) / Vaccinium alaskaense Forest
Reference: NatureServe Biotics 2019
Description: This western hemlock - Pacific silver fir forest of British Columbia, Washington and Oregon has a canopy that is usually codominated by Tsuga heterophylla, Abies amabilis, and Pseudotsuga menziesii (latter often absent). Abies amabilis dominates tree regeneration and occupies over 10% total cover. The shrub layer is usually well-developed but is occasionally very sparse. Vaccinium alaskaense dominates the shrub layer and is always present. Mahonia nervosa is sometimes prominent to codominant. The herb layer is usually sparse to occasionally moderate, with Clintonia uniflora and Cornus unalaschkensis the only species present in many stands. Linnaea borealis or Xerophyllum tenax are occasionally prominent to dominant. In Washington, this association occurs at middle elevations in the western Cascades and in the Olympic Mountains on well-drained soils and moderate to somewhat dry sites on a variety of topographic settings. This association is widespread and occurs commonly in the mountains of western Washington and has been impacted by logging.
