Name: Pseudotsuga menziesii - Tsuga heterophylla / Rhododendron macrophyllum Forest
Reference: NatureServe Biotics 2019
Description: This Douglas-fir - western hemlock forest of Washington and Oregon has a canopy dominated by Pseudotsuga menziesii and Tsuga heterophylla. Both are always present and the latter dominates tree regeneration. The well-developed shrub layer is dominated or codominated by Rhododendron macrophyllum. Gaultheria shallon and Mahonia nervosa are usually present and either can codominate. The herb layer varies from sparse to well-developed; when prominent it is dominated by Xerophyllum tenax. Linnaea borealis is often present. If Polystichum munitum is present, it has less than 3% cover. This association occurs at low to moderate elevations on mid to upper slopes, ridgetops, and benches, especially on south to west aspects. Sites have dry, well-drained soils that are often shallow or very rocky.
