Description: This western hemlock forest of Oregon and Washington and possibly California has a canopy dominated by <i>Tsuga heterophylla</i>. <i>Pseudotsuga menziesii</i> is occasionally prominent. The shrub layer ranges from sparse to moderately dense. <i>Vaccinium alaskaense, Vaccinium parvifolium, Gaultheria shallon, Rubus spectabilis</i>, and <i>Menziesia ferruginea</i> all occur in most stands. Only the <i>Vaccinium</i> spp. are sometimes prominent. The well-developed herb layer is codominated by <i>Polystichum munitum</i> and <i>Blechnum spicant</i>. The environmental characteristics of this association have not been well described. It has been found at low elevations on moist sites with well-drained, deep soils on the western Olympic Peninsula and at Mount Rainier, Washington.
