Name:
Corylus cornuta - Amelanchier spp. Ruderal Shrubland
Reference:
NatureServe Biotics 2019
Description:
This association is currently only described from Saint Croix National Scenic Riverway, Minnesota and Wisconsin. Additional global information will be added as it becomes available. Sites are flat to gently sloping uplands with well-drained sand and loamy sand soils. The unvegetated surface is dominated by leaf litter with some wood and dead plant stems. Evidence of disturbance includes recent logging and the presence of exotic plants. The moderate to dense (40-80%) short-shrub layer (0.5-1 m tall) of Corylus americana or Corylus cornuta is the dominant stratum; additional shrubs include Amelanchier sanguinea, Carpinus caroliniana, Crataegus chrysocarpa, Diervilla lonicera, Populus tremuloides, Prunus serotina, Rubus allegheniensis, Toxicodendron radicans ssp. radicans, Zanthoxylum americanum, and others. One of the sampled stands also has a very sparse (5%) tree canopy (5-10 m) of Quercus rubra and moderately dense (70%) tall-shrub layer (2-5 m) of Populus tremuloides. Vaccinium angustifolium and Vaccinium myrtilloides may form a very sparse (5%) dwarf-shrub layer. The sparse (10-30%) herbaceous layer may include Achillea millefolium, Andropogon gerardii, Anemone quinquefolia, Carex siccata, Carex pensylvanica, Danthonia spicata, Eurybia macrophylla, Fragaria vesca, Galium circaezans, Lysimachia quadriflora, Maianthemum canadense, Monarda fistulosa, Oryzopsis asperifolia, Polygonatum pubescens, Pteridium aquilinum, and others.
