Description: This western hemlock - Pacific silver fir forest of Washington and Oregon has a canopy dominated by <i>Tsuga heterophylla</i> or codominated by that species and <i>Abies amabilis</i>. <i>Abies amabilis</i> dominates or codominates tree regeneration and occupies over 10% total cover. <i>Pseudotsuga menziesii</i> is occasionally present to prominent. The shrub layer varies from sparse to moderately dense. When it is more developed (only occasionally), it is dominated by <i>Gaultheria shallon</i> or <i>Vaccinium alaskaense</i>. <i>Vaccinium parvifolium</i> and <i>Rubus spectabilis</i> are present or occasionally prominent. The usually well-developed herb layer is dominated or codominated by <i>Oxalis oregana</i>. <i>Polystichum munitum</i> is usually present and occasionally codominant. <i>Blechnum spicant</i> is almost always present to occasionally prominent. <i>Maianthemum dilatatum</i> or <i>Tiarella trifoliata</i> is frequently present. This association occurs extensively on the western Olympic Peninsula at low to moderate elevations. Sites occupied have relatively deep, well-drained, moist soils, and occur on a variety of topography. This association has been impacted by logging.
