Description: This western hemlock - Pacific silver fir forest of Washington has a canopy dominated by <i>Tsuga heterophylla</i> and/or <i>Abies amabilis</i> (usually both). <i>Abies amabilis</i> occupies over 10% total cover (understory and canopy). <i>Thuja plicata</i> is occasionally prominent. <i>Vaccinium alaskaense</i> dominates the well-developed shrub layer. <i>Rubus spectabilis</i> is usually present. The diverse herb layer is usually well-developed. <i>Blechnum spicant, Tiarella trifoliata var. unifoliata, Streptopus lanceolatus var. curvipes, Athyrium filix-femina, Clintonia uniflora, Cornus unalaschkensis</i>, and <i>Rubus pedatus</i> are usually present. <i>Maianthemum dilatatum</i> sometimes dominates the herb layer. This association occurs at middle elevations in the western Cascades and Olympic Mountains. Sites have moist, well-drained to subirrigated soils in a variety of topographic positions.
