Reference: NatureServe Biotics 2019
Description: This Douglas-fir - western hemlock forest of Washington, Oregon and California has a canopy typically codominated by Pseudotsuga menziesii and Tsuga heterophylla. Tsuga heterophylla dominates tree regeneration. The shrub layer is rather sparse to moderate. Acer circinatum often forms a prominent tall-shrub layer. Mahonia nervosa and Vaccinium parvifolium are usually present and occasionally prominent. The well-developed herb layer is codominated by Polystichum munitum and Oxalis oregana. This association occurs at low elevation on lower slopes or valley bottoms with moist but well-drained soils.
