Description: This western hemlock forest of Alaska, Washington and Oregon has a canopy dominated by <i>Tsuga heterophylla</i> or codominated by that species and <i>Pseudotsuga menziesii</i>. <i>Thuja plicata</i> is often prominent. <i>Tsuga heterophylla</i> dominates tree regeneration and <i>Abies amabilis</i> is often present in small amounts. The moderate to dense shrub layer is dominated or codominated by <i>Vaccinium alaskaense</i>. <i>Vaccinium parvifolium</i> is usually present and sometimes codominant. <i>Gaultheria shallon</i> and <i>Acer circinatum</i> are frequently present, the latter sometimes prominent. The herb layer is generally poorly developed. <i>Blechnum spicant, Polystichum munitum</i>, and <i>Cornus unalaschkensis</i> are usually present in small amounts. This association occurs at low to middle elevations on mid to toe slopes, valley bottoms and benches with well-drained, moist soils. This association occurs in the mountains of western Washington where it has been impacted by logging.
