Description: This mountain hemlock - Pacific silver fir woodland of Washington and British Columbia has a canopy that is usually codominated by <i>Tsuga mertensiana</i> and <i>Abies amabilis</i> (the latter can be absent). Occasionally, <i>Abies lasiocarpa</i> or <i>Callitropsis nootkatensis</i> are codominant. The well-developed shrub layer is dominated by <i>Vaccinium membranaceum</i>. <i>Sorbus sitchensis</i> is usually present. The short shrub <i>Vaccinium deliciosum</i> is often prominent. The herb layer is well-developed and dominated by <i>Valeriana sitchensis</i>. <i>Veratrum viride</i> and <i>Arnica latifolia</i> are usually present. This open forest or woodland association occurs at high elevations on upper slopes and ridgetops with well-drained, rocky or shallow soils in the Cascades and possibly Olympic Mountains of Washington.
