Name: Ericameria nana / Poa secunda - Penstemon deustus Sparse Vegetation Reference: NatureServe Biotics 2019 Description: This association of the intermountain western U.S. is characterized by a dwarf-shrub stratum with low to moderate cover dominated by <i>Ericameria nana</i> and <i>Eriogonum microthecum</i>. Taller shrubs are occasionally present and <i>Holodiscus dumosus</i> and/or <i>Purshia tridentata</i> often occur as scattered individuals throughout the plant community. The sparse herbaceous layer typically has higher graminoid cover and diversity than other cinder land communities. Commonly occurring graminoid species include <i>Poa secunda, Elymus elymoides</i>, and <i>Hesperostipa comata</i>. <i>Penstemon deustus</i> is a characteristic forb species of this association. Other common forbs include <i>Potentilla glandulosa, Linanthus pungens, Stephanomeria minor</i>, and <i>Phacelia hastata</i>. This association, like all associations in ~Inter-Mountain Basins Volcanic Rock and Cinder Land (CES304.791)$$, is limited to barren and sparsely vegetated volcanic substrates of basalt and basaltic andesite origin, including tuffs, cinder cones, spatter cones, pressure plateaus, or cinder fields. It may occur in large-patch, small-patch or linear spatial patterns.
