Name: Juniperus (scopulorum, osteosperma) / Ericameria nana Wooded Grassland Reference: NatureServe Biotics 2019 Description: This community of the intermountain western U.S. is characterized by an open tree canopy dominated by <i>Juniperus osteosperma, Juniperus scopulorum</i>, or a combination of both. Total tree cover is usually less than 10% and canopy height is usually 2-10 m. The dwarf-shrub <i>Ericameria nana</i> is characteristic of this association. <i>Ericameria nauseosa</i> and <i>Purshia tridentata</i> often occur in the sparse shrub stratum, and other shrub species, such as <i>Holodiscus dumosus</i>, may occasionally be present but not very constant across stands of this type. The moderate herbaceous layer is dominated equally by graminoids such as <i>Poa secunda, Achnatherum hymenoides, Elymus elymoides</i>, and <i>Bromus tectorum</i>, and forbs such as <i>Linanthus pungens, Penstemon deustus, Potentilla glandulosa</i>, and <i>Stephanomeria minor</i>. This association, like all associations in ~Inter-Mountain Basins Volcanic Rock and Cinder Land (CES304.791)$$, is limited to barren and sparsely vegetated volcanic substrates of basalt and basaltic andesite origin, including tuffs, cinder cones, spatter cones, pressure plateaus, or cinder fields.
