Name: Abies lasiocarpa - Tsuga mertensiana / Festuca viridula Woodland
Reference: NatureServe Biotics 2019
Description: This type occurs as tree islands or ribbons in subalpine parkland. The tree canopy is codominated by Abies lasiocarpa and sometimes Tsuga mertensiana. There is no shrub layer. The well-developed herb layer is usually codominated by Festuca viridula, Luzula glabrata var. hitchcockii, and Lupinus arcticus ssp. subalpinus and/or Lupinus latifolius. Festuca viridula has over 10% cover. Eucephalus ledophyllus and Polemonium pulcherrimum are usually prominent. This association occurs at high elevations on northeastern slopes of Mount Rainier, and possibly in the eastern North Cascades, as well as in Oregon. Sites are near the upper limit of tree growth.
