Description: The association is found at mid to upper elevations in arroyos and drainage channels in the Mojave Desert in California. Vegetation is characterized by an open to moderately dense, often patchy shrub canopy (13-29% cover) dominated or codominated by <i>Salvia dorrii</i> with characteristic shrubs <i>Cylindropuntia acanthocarpa, Salazaria mexicana</i>, and <i>Thamnosma montana</i> present to codominant. <i>Prunus fasciculata</i> is often present with moderately high cover. Many other shrubs are frequently present. Occasional emergent <i>Pinus monophylla</i> or <i>Yucca brevifolia</i> trees are sometimes present. The herbaceous layer is sparse and composed of native grasses and forbs, including <i>Achnatherum speciosum, Adenophyllum cooperi, Castilleja angustifolia, Eriogonum inflatum, Heliomeris multiflora, Mirabilis pumila, Oenothera caespitosa, Penstemon palmeri, Sphaeralcea ambigua</i>, and <i>Tridens muticus</i>, and exotic annuals include <i>Bromus rubens</i> and <i>Erodium cicutarium</i>. Stands occur in lower canyons, upper arroyos and drainage channels at 1180-1570 m elevation. Sites are gentle to moderate slopes on variable aspects. Soils are sands or sandy loams, with high cover of gravel, cobble, and stone and derived from a variety of substrates.
