Additional shrubs are often present. Occasional emergent Pinus monophylla or Yucca brevifolia trees are sometimes present. If present, the herbaceous layer is typically open and ranges to 17% cover with native grasses and forbs that include Pleuraphis rigida, Adenophyllum porophylloides, Xylorhiza tortifolia, and exotic annuals Bromus rubens and Erodium cicutarium. Sites are on gentle to steep slopes on a variety of aspects. Soils usually range from clay loams to sandy loams, and are derived from a variety of substrates, such as alluvium, gneiss, and limestone.
