Description: This shrubland association is currently only known from Wupatki National Monument in Arizona, and the following description is based on occurrences there. Additional information will be added as it becomes available. Elevation ranges from 1475-1485 m (4839-4872 feet). Stands occur on flat or low slopes from 0-5%. This association occurs specifically on cinder dunes or hummocks with cinder substrate. Total vegetation cover ranges from 20-25% in the shrub and herbaceous layers. The total species diversity ranges from 6-9 species within sampled plots. The shrub layer is dominated by <i>Ephedra torreyana</i>. However, <i>Fallugia paradoxa</i> may dominate or codominate in some areas. The herbaceous layer is low to moderate with <i>Achnatherum hymenoides</i> occurring and acting as an indicator species for this association.
