Name: Artemisia arbuscula ssp. longiloba / Poa fendleriana Shrubland Reference: NatureServe Biotics 2019 Description: This alkali sagebrush low shrubland is only known from Fossil Butte National Monument in southwestern Wyoming. Stands occur on gentle to steep (2-24°), west-, northwest- or east-facing slopes between 2080 and 2450 m elevation. The unvegetated surface has moderate exposure of bare soil, moderate cover of litter, and low cover of small and large rocks. Soils are well-drained to rapidly drained clay loams or clays derived from the Wasatch Formation. This association is characterized by a sparse to moderate the short-shrub layer dominated by <i>Artemisia arbuscula ssp. longiloba</i> (1-20% cover) and the perennial bunchgrass <i>Poa fendleriana</i> (1-15% cover) that dominates the understory. This association includes sparsely vegetated stands as total vegetation cover ranges from 2-43%. The shrub layer includes other the short and dwarf-shrubs, such as <i>Artemisia tripartita, Atriplex confertifolia, Cercocarpus montanus, Chrysothamnus viscidiflorus</i>, and <i>Ericameria nauseosa</i>, that provide sparse cover.
