Description: This inland red maple swamp of New Jersey has <i>Betula alleghaniensis</i> as the differential canopy component. Water is flowing, rather than stagnant, within this community. <i>Betula alleghaniensis</i> and <i>Acer rubrum</i> dominate the canopy, in association with <i>Fagus grandifolia, Nyssa sylvatica, Quercus alba</i>, and <i>Quercus rubra</i>. Shrubs include <i>Lindera benzoin, Clethra alnifolia, Viburnum dentatum</i>, and <i>Viburnum prunifolium</i>. The herbaceous layer is dominated by <i>Osmunda cinnamomea</i> and <i>Impatiens capensis</i>, with lesser amounts of <i>Polygonum persicaria, Polygonum sagittatum, Dichanthelium clandestinum, Solidago canadensis</i>, and <i>Athyrium filix-femina</i>.
