Description: This type represents coastal white - pine oak forests of the Northeast. They occur on sand and gravel of outwash plains and are sheltered from maritime influences. These forests are dominated by <i>Pinus strobus, Quercus alba</i>, and <i>Quercus velutina</i> in the canopy with occasional <i>Pinus rigida</i> in low abundance. The shrub layer is characterized by <i>Ilex glabra</i>, which is diagnostic of the association, and also contains <i>Vaccinium corymbosum</i> and <i>Gaylussacia frondosa</i>. The herb layer contains <i>Pyrola</i> spp., <i>Monotropa uniflora, Goodyera tesselata</i>, and several ferns.
