Description: In the Central Appalachians these are small grassland openings on calcareous rocky summits characterized by <i>Bouteloua curtipendula, Andropogon gerardii, Sorghastrum nutans</i>, and <i>Schizachyrium scoparium</i>. Associates include <i>Carex pensylvanica, Lithospermum canescens, Solidago bicolor, Packera obovata, Asclepias verticillata, Anemone virginiana</i>. Scattered shrubs and stunted trees include <i>Cercis canadensis, Juniperus virginiana, Fraxinus americana, Ostrya virginiana, Quercus muehlenbergii, Pinus pungens, Rhus aromatica</i>. These communities occur on upper slopes and rocky summits with thin soils over calcareous bedrock.
