Description: This herbaceous community is found on dry sandy soils in abandoned agricultural fields and along roadsides from coastal Massachusetts to Maryland. Diagnostic features include the dominance of <i>Panicum virgatum</i> in an upland environmental setting. <i>Panicum virgatum</i> is the dominant species, but <i>Andropogon virginicus</i> may be codominant. Other species may include <i>Conyza canadensis, Tridens flavus, Rhexia mariana, Juncus tenuis, Helenium autumnale, Ageratina altissima, Sorghastrum nutans</i>, and <i>Dichanthelium clandestinum</i>. <i>Solidago rugosa, Rumex acetosella</i>, and <i>Anthoxanthum odoratum</i> are associates documented from Massachusetts. Scattered shrubs including <i>Morella pensylvanica</i> are often present.
