Reference: NatureServe Biotics 2019
Description: This woodland is a globally rare type of pitch pine lowland provisionally ranked G1S1, which is restricted to the central New Jersey Pinelands. The best examples are found in Wharton State Forest near Skit Branch and Atsion lowland. It is usually found at the subhydric ecotone between other pitch pine lowland types and upland sites. This association has an open canopy of Pinus rigida typically with about 25% cover. A low-shrub stratum completely to partially dominated by Leiophyllum buxifolium is typical, which is sometimes codominated by Kalmia angustifolia and Gaylussacia baccata. Other shrubs of pitch pine lowlands can also be possible at low percent covers, such as Lyonia mariana, Aronia melanocarpa, Vaccinium corymbosum, Leucothoe racemosa, Ilex glabra, Clethra alnifolia, Gaylussacia frondosa, Gaylussacia dumosa, Quercus marilandica, and Quercus ilicifolia. Scattered herbs can include Hudsonia ericoides, Panicum virgatum, Panicum spp., Andropogon virginicus, Schizachyrium scoparium, Pyxidanthera barbulata, Pteridium aquilinum, Xerophyllum asphodeloides, Calamovilfa brevipilis, and Spiranthes lacera. Lichens can include Cladonia rappii and Cladonia spp.
