Description: This forest occurs at high elevations in the mountain ranges of Trans-Pecos Texas. Dominant canopy species are <i>Pinus ponderosa var. scopulorum</i> and <i>Pinus strobiformis</i>. Other canopy species sometimes present include <i>Pseudotsuga menziesii var. glauca</i> and <i>Pinus edulis</i>. Subcanopy can include <i>Quercus gambelii</i>. Herbs and shrubs are sparse, but may include <i>Piptochaetium fimbriatum, Lonicera albiflora, Holodiscus discolor, Carex geophila, Bromus anomalus, Amelanchier utahensis</i> and <i>Mahonia repens</i>. In grassy openings, typical species include <i>Muhlenbergia dubia, Koeleria macrantha, Festuca arizonica</i>, and <i>Bouteloua curtipendula</i>. It intergrades with various woodlands, including <i>Pinus ponderosa</i>-dominated woodlands.
