Name: Quercus phellos - Quercus similis Pond Forest
Reference: NatureServe Biotics 2019
Description: This willow oak - bottomland post oak flatwoods is found in the Interior Highlands in Arkansas (and perhaps Oklahoma and Missouri). These flatwoods are characterized by a strongly fluctuating seasonal moisture regime (xerohydric). Stands of this community are codominated by Quercus phellos, which may be the sole dominant, along with Quercus similis. It occurs on poorly drained flats which usually have a fragipan. Additional characteristic overstory and midstory species include Quercus pagoda and Carya ovata. The flats are often mounded and may have substantial depressions that pond water (and if extensive enough, these may be classified as ~Quercus phellos Ozark Pond Forest (CEGL007402)$$ or ~Quercus lyrata Pond Forest (CEGL004642)$$). These geomorphic features allow hydrophytic species such as Quercus lyrata or mesophytic species such as Quercus alba, Quercus nigra, and Carya tomentosa to codominate, and even allow some xerophytic species such as Quercus stellata and Carya texana to occur, thereby allowing for high species diversity in stands of this type.
