Name: Salix nigra / (Clethra alnifolia, Morella cerifera) / Nyssa aquatica Ruderal Wet Forest
Reference: NatureServe Biotics 2019
Description: This forest, dominated by Salix nigra, occurs as a result of clearcut logging of forests dominated by Taxodium distichum and/or Nyssa aquatica. It occurs in very low areas of river floodplains throughout the lower Atlantic and Gulf coastal plains and in the Mississippi River Alluvial Plain. Succession may lead to re-establishment of dominance by Taxodium distichum and Nyssa aquatica. Stump sprouts of Nyssa spp. may occur as canopy emergents. Tree seedlings of several species (Taxodium distichum, Nyssa aquatica, Nyssa biflora, Acer rubrum, and Fraxinus caroliniana) may be found growing beneath the shrub layer. Common shrubs are Clethra alnifolia, Lyonia ligustrina var. foliosiflora, Itea virginica, and Morella cerifera. Occurrences are most common on alluvial soils, usually Inceptisols with a clay component, and most will experience annual flooding.
