Description: This association includes forests of cheniers (old isolated beach ridges surrounded by marsh) of coastal Louisiana. Soils are silty clay loams, and there is sometimes a substantial shell hash component. The 6- to 15-m tall closed canopy is composed of <i>Quercus virginiana, Celtis laevigata, Gleditsia triacanthos, Sideroxylon lanuginosum, Zanthoxylum clava-herculis</i>, and <i>Ulmus americana</i>. The subcanopy consists of <i>Crataegus viridis, Quercus nigra, Ilex decidua</i>, and canopy species. The open to dense shrub layer includes <i>Sabal minor, Ilex vomitoria, Diospyros virginiana, Nekemias arborea, Toxicodendron radicans, Vitis mustangensis, Campsis radicans</i>, and <i>Parthenocissus quinquefolia</i>. Herbs include <i>Oplismenus hirtellus</i> and <i>Tillandsia usneoides</i>. This type lacks many species typical of related types, such as <i>Magnolia grandiflora, Ilex opaca var. opaca, Liquidambar styraciflua</i>, and <i>Viburnum dentatum</i>.
