Description:
This community is found in the Ozarks region of the United States. It occurs on gently sloping exposures of dolomite (or possibly sometimes limestone). Soils are very rapidly drained and very shallow (0-40 cm). The canopy is open to closed (>25% cover), stunted (4-10 m tall), and dominated by <i>Juniperus ashei</i>. Other species which form a minor component of the canopy are <i>Quercus muehlenbergii, Juniperus virginiana var. virginiana, Fraxinus americana, Fraxinus quadrangulata, Quercus stellata, Sideroxylon lanuginosum</i>. The understory consists of <i>Cotinus obovatus, Cercis canadensis var. canadensis</i>, and canopy species. <i>Rhus aromatica var. serotina, Ilex decidua, Hypericum prolificum, Diospyros virginiana, Frangula caroliniana, Celtis tenuifolia, Chionanthus virginicus, Berchemia scandens, Smilax bona-nox</i>, and <i>Smilax rotundifolia</i> are common shrubs. The dominant herb is <i>Carex eburnea</i>, which forms dense mats. Other herbs, especially present in small openings, include <i>Rudbeckia missouriensis, Allium cernuum, Arabis canadensis, Croton capitatus, Croton monanthogynus, Croton michauxii var. ellipticus, Stenaria nigricans var. nigricans, Heliotropium tenellum, Liatris cylindracea, Liatris scariosa var. nieuwlandii, Palafoxia callosa, Panicum virgatum, Parietaria pensylvanica, Pellaea glabella, Ruellia humilis</i>, and <i>Salvia azurea var. grandiflora</i>. The dominant moss is <i>Pleurochaete luteola</i>.
