Description:
This forest occurs on infrequently flooded, base-rich alluvial terraces along small streams in the upper southeastern United States. In addition to <i>Platanus occidentalis, Celtis laevigata</i>, and <i>Liriodendron tulipifera</i>, other dominants of the closed canopy can include <i>Acer negundo, Juglans nigra, Acer saccharum</i>, and <i>Fraxinus pennsylvanica</i>. Several other canopy components are possible. Midstory components include <i>Carpinus caroliniana, Acer floridanum, Ulmus rubra</i>, and <i>Tilia americana</i>. The understory is often dominated by <i>Lindera benzoin</i>. The ground cover flora is variable in composition and cover. Ground cover components include <i>Polystichum acrostichoides, Elymus virginicus, Verbesina occidentalis, Verbesina virginica, Verbesina alternifolia, Viola</i> sp., <i>Chasmanthium latifolium, Polygonum virginianum, Amphicarpaea bracteata, Boehmeria cylindrica</i>, and <i>Laportea canadensis</i>. This community is reported to have a rich herbaceous flora in the spring. The invasive exotics <i>Glechoma hederacea, Ligustrum sinense</i>, and <i>Microstegium vimineum</i> may invade examples of this community.
