Name: Pinus monticola / Achnatherum occidentale Woodland
Reference: NatureServe Biotics 2019
Description: This forest association is currently only known from Yosemite National Park in California, and the following description is based on occurrences there. Additional information will be added as it becomes available. In Yosemite and environs, this association occurs between 2350 to 3080 m (7700-10,100 feet) in elevation, primarily on somewhat gentle to moderate slopes, often near or partially on the tops of ridges. Aspects are northwest, west, southwest, and south. Soils are derived from granite. Textures are sand or sandy loam. Large rock/boulder cover may reach 27% of the stand, but bare soil also may reach 75%. Sites are upland. This association consists of an open tree canopy dominated by Pinus monticola, which averages 15% cover. Abies magnifica and Pinus contorta var. murrayana may also be present but in small numbers. The shrub layer is essentially nonexistent. The herb layer averages 10% cover, with the most frequent species being Elymus elymoides and Achnatherum occidentale. Other herb species that may be present include Arabis platysperma and Eriogonum incanum.
