Name: Pinus ponderosa - Calocedrus decurrens - Quercus chrysolepis / Chamaebatia foliolosa Forest
Reference: NatureServe Biotics 2019
Description: This forest association is currently only known from Yosemite National Park in California, and the following description is based on occurrences there. Additional information will be added as it becomes available. Stands are found at submesic environments of low to mid elevations (1280-1710 m [4200-5600 feet]) on the mid to upper portions of southeast-, southwest- to west-facing, gentle to steep (2-28°) slopes. Soils are usually poorly developed and sometimes rocky. Depths are shallow to medium, and textures range from rocky to silt loam and of granitic parent material. Penetrability is easy to difficult. Fire is fairly frequent this association. Stands form open to moderately closed canopies dominated by Pinus ponderosa, Calocedrus decurrens, and Quercus chrysolepis. Chamaebatia foliolosa understory density is highly variable depending on the openness of the canopy. Quercus kelloggii is sometimes present. Quercus kelloggii appeared to replace the Quercus chrysolepis adjacent to the steeper rockier sites. Pinus ponderosa and Umbellularia californica may sometimes be present in the overstory. Toxicodendron diversilobum, Arctostaphylos patula, Arctostaphylos viscida, and Cercocarpus montanus var. glaber may sometimes be present in the understory.
