Description: This evergreen forest association has been described from the northern Sierra Nevada and southern Cascade Ranges in California. In the northern Sierra Nevada, elevations average 1525 m (5000 feet), and aspects are northeast, east, and northwest. Slopes range from gentle to steep. The association occurs in upper and midslope positions, and soils are gravelly sandy loams, sandy loams and loams, and are often derived from volcanic substrates. Mature forests have a moderately dense to dense conifer overstory often codominated by variable mixtures of <i>Abies lowiana, Calocedrus decurrens, Pinus lambertiana</i>, and <i>Pinus ponderosa</i>. The understory is sparse, with <i>Maianthemum racemosum</i> and <i>Prosartes hookeri</i> being most prevalent. <i>Chimaphila menziesii</i> is also a constant species.
