Description: This forest association is currently only known from Yosemite National Park in California, and the following description is based on occurrences there. Additional information will be added as it becomes available. Stands are found at high elevations (2710-3110 m [8900-10,200 feet]) on gentle to steep slopes (3-27°). Slopes are concave in shape. Aspect ranges from west to northeast; however, it is often northwest. These sites can be rocky. Soils are poorly developed to well-developed with textures that range from rocky gravel to rock, gravelly, sandy loam. Soils are well-drained with soil depths ranging from shallow to deep. Parent material is granite. Fire is uncommon and restricted in size. Disturbance levels are usually low. Stands are characterized by <i>Tsuga mertensiana, Pinus contorta</i>, and <i>Pinus albicaulis</i> in the overstory. <i>Juncus parryi</i> and or <i>Juncus</i> sp. are often present in this association. Other species that are occasionally found contributing to low cover include <i>Arctostaphylos nevadensis, Phyllodoce breweri, Selaginella watsonii, Sedum obtusatum, Carex rossii, Phlox diffusa, Penstemon newberryi, Cryptogramma acrostichoides, Antennaria rosea</i>, and <i>Elymus elymoides ssp. californicus</i>.
