Name: Artemisia californica / Nassella pulchra Island Mesic Scrub
Reference: NatureServe Biotics 2019
Description: This coastal scrub association is dominated by the shrub Artemisia californica with Baccharis pilularis often present. Nassella pulchra is a characteristic herbaceous species and codominates the herbaceous layer. Other herbs often present are Avena spp. and Bromus madritensis. This association forms an open scrub with 6 to 60% canopy coverage, and an herbaceous layer is also quite open with from 3 to 50% canopy coverage. This association is found on all slope positions and at all aspects, though primarily on southerly aspects, and often at the bottom third of slopes. Soil textures are sandy, clay loams or fine clay. Elevations range from approximately sea level to 400 m. The association occurs on the northern Channel Islands and is likely to occur on the California mainland, although it has not been observed nor documented on the mainland.
