Name: Baccharis pilularis / Bromus carinatus - Ranunculus californicus Mesic Shrubland
Reference: NatureServe Biotics 2019
Description: This coastal scrub has a shrub cover of Baccharis pilularis with 3-36% canopy coverage. The understory is a mix of native herbaceous species often with a high cover of non-native grasses. A suite of native herbaceous species, such as Bromus carinatus, Corethrogyne filaginifolia, Nassella pulchra, Festuca idahoensis, Elymus glaucus, Agoseris grandiflora, Ranunculus californicus, Gamochaeta ustulata, Leymus triticoides, and others, can be present. The non-native introduced grasses Bromus diandrus, Bromus hordeaceus, Briza maxima, and Avena species can be abundant with up to 20% relative cover. However, this is not considered a ruderal type because of the mix of native herbaceous species that in combination provide greater relative cover than the non-native species. This association occurs on the southern California Channel Islands, and along the central California coast mainland.
