Name: Baccharis pilularis Shrubland
Reference: NatureServe Biotics 2019
Description: This coastal shrubland forms an open shrub layer with an herbaceous layer that is open to sporadic. Baccharis pilularis is the dominant and characteristic shrub, and Artemisia californica or Isocoma menziesii is often present. The herbaceous understory is highly variable and can be dominated by non-native introduced species, or it can be quite sparse. Native species with occasional high cover include Distichlis spicata, Astragalus miguelensis, Corethrogyne filaginifolia, Leymus condensatus, and Nassella species, but none of these has a consistency above 30%. The non-native, introduced species Bromus diandrus and Bromus madritensis can be abundant, but again these have a constancy less than 25%. The association occurs on the Channel Islands and in the Santa Monica Mountains on the California mainland. It is found on all slope positions at primarily northerly aspects. Soils are derived from a variety of substrates but primarily older alluvium, lake, playa, and terrace deposits. Soil textures include sandy and clay loams. Elevations range from approximately 2 to 550 m.
