Name: Ambrosia chamissonis - Malacothrix incana - Poa douglasii Sand Dune
Reference: NatureServe Biotics 2019
Description: This association is characterized by a sparse to scattered dune herbaceous vegetation dominated by Ambrosia chamissonis, Malacothrix incana, and Poa douglasii. The non-native Carpobrotus chilensis may also be a dominant forb. The overall plant cover ranges from 1 to 60%. Other associated species include shrubs Isocoma menziesii and Lupinus albifrons and herbaceous species Astragalus miguelensis, Erigeron glaucus, and Abronia maritima. Ambrosia may be dominant and, if so, the cover of Abronia, Cakile maritima, or Distichlis spicata is low. At least two of the three species found in the association name must be present and abundant. The association is known from San Miguel and Santa Rosa islands of the southern Channel Islands, and may occur on the southern California mainland. It occurs on active sand dunes and in more stabilized areas and may have very low total cover.
