Name: Frankenia salina - Distichlis spicata Coastal Alkaline Grassland
Reference: NatureServe Biotics 2019
Description: This coastal grassland has an open to continuous layer of Frankenia salina and Distichlis spicata, with an overall herbaceous cover that ranges from 10 to 70%. Frankenia salina is codominant with Distichlis spicata at greater than 30% relative cover. Other herbaceous and subshrub species present may include native species such as Ambrosia chamissonis, Atriplex californica, and Sarcocornia pacifica. Non- native species are often present and include Hordeum murinum, Malephora crocea, Mesembryanthemum crystallinum, Mesembryanthemum nodiflorum, Sonchus asper, and Sonchus oleraceus. The shrub Isocoma menziesii can be present with very sparse cover. This association has been documented within the San Francisco Baylands and on the Channel Islands and is likely elsewhere on the California mainland. It is often found at sea level to 60 m in elevation at the bottom and middle of the slopes with northwest aspects or on flats adjacent to the beach or coastal bluffs, where it receives salt spray.
