Name: Ambrosia chamissonis - Abronia maritima - Cakile maritima Dune Mat
Reference: NatureServe Biotics 2019
Description: This sand dune mat association is characterized by an open to scattered layer of Abronia maritima, Ambrosia chamissonis, and Cakile maritima. The overall herbaceous cover ranges from 5 to 47%. Either Abronia spp., Ambrosia chamissonis, or Cakile maritima are the dominant forb. If Ambrosia is dominant, the next highest cover species is Abronia, Cakile maritima, or Distichlis spicata. Distichlis may have higher cover than all the forbs but is less than 75% relative cover. Characteristic herbs include Abronia maritima, Ambrosia chamissonis, and Cakile maritima. Herbs often present are Distichlis spicata and Malacothrix incana. The association is sampled on San Miguel, San Nicolas, and Santa Rosa islands, as well as the southern California mainland, and is limited to southern California. Elevations range from approximately sea level to 30 m. It occurs in sandy dune areas and may be low in total cover. This association is found primarily on the lower to bottom portions of slopes at variable aspects. Soils are derived from a variety of substrates but primarily alluvium, lake, playa, and terrace deposits. The soil texture is sand.
