Name: Ephedra cutleri / Achnatherum hymenoides - Muhlenbergia pungens - Oenothera pallida Sandsheet Shrubland
Reference: NatureServe Biotics 2019
Description: This sandsheet shrubland association is known from Glen Canyon National Recreation Area and likely occurs more widely in the Colorado Plateau. It is characterized by an open shrub canopy dominated by Ephedra cutleri (with 5 to 14% cover) with an abundant herbaceous layer. Associated shrubs present with sparse to low cover may include Coleogyne ramosissima, Gutierrezia sarothrae, Eriogonum leptocladon, Psoralidium junceum, Psorothamnus fremontii, Vanclevea stylosa, and Yucca angustissima. The herbaceous layer is moderately dense and is dominated by sand-loving plants such as Achnatherum hymenoides, Muhlenbergia pungens, and/or Oenothera pallida. Other native grass species may be present with sparse to low cover, including Bouteloua gracilis, Sporobolus contractus, and Sporobolus cryptandrus. Forbs have sparse to low cover and are dominated by weedy annuals, such as Ambrosia acanthicarpa, Descurainia pinnata, Dicoria canescens, Plantago patagonica, and Salsola tragus; native perennial forbs Amsonia tomentosa, Dalea candida, Cryptantha spp., Helianthus annuus, Hymenopappus filifolius, Machaeranthera canescens, and Sphaeralcea ambigua are present with more than trace cover. This shrubland has total vegetation cover between 17 and 40%. This dune-like shrubland association occurs on dunefields and mesatops generally between 1113 and 1176 m elevation although occasionally extending to 1780 m elevation. Sites are gently to moderately sloping and occur on cooler north and east aspects. Sand and bare soil cover most of the unvegetated surface. Soils are sands derived from eolian deposits or sandstones.
