Name: Quercus havardii var. tuckeri - Eriogonum leptocladon - Artemisia filifolia Sandsheet Shrubland
Reference: NatureServe Biotics 2019
Description: This shrubland association is known from Glen Canyon National Recreation Area and likely occurs more widely in sandy areas in the Colorado Plateau. It is characterized by a mixed, sparse to moderately dense canopy of Quercus havardii, Artemisia filifolia, and Eriogonum leptocladon, usually with less than 10% cover each. One of these shrubs may be absent, but at a minimum either Quercus or Eriogonum is always present. In many stands, Ephedra viridis, Ephedra cutleri, and/or Psorothamnus fremontii share dominance in the shrub layer. Many other associated shrubs may be present with sparse to low cover. The herbaceous layer has sparse to low cover and is dominated by native grasses Achnatherum hymenoides, Achnatherum speciosum, Sporobolus contractus, Sporobolus flexuosus, and Sporobolus giganteus. Sparse to low cover of the exotic annual grass Bromus tectorum may be present. Forb cover is sparse. Total vegetation cover is between 5 and 32%. Stands occur on plateaus, mesas, sand dunes, and valley floors between 1160 and 1550 m elevation. Sites are flat to moderately sloping and are generally oriented to the southwest and west. Bare soil and sand cover are abundant, with lesser cover by bedrock. Soils are sandy loams, silts, loamy sands, and sands derived from eolian deposits or from sandstones.
