Name: Chrysothamnus viscidiflorus / Disturbed Understory Shrubland Reference: NatureServe Biotics 2019 Description: This shrubland association is known from Glen Canyon National Recreation Area and likely occurs more widely in the Colorado Plateau. It is characterized by an open to moderately dense shrub canopy layer dominated by <i>Chrysothamnus viscidiflorus</i>. Associated shrubs with sparse to low cover include <i>Amelanchier utahensis, Artemisia tridentata, Atriplex canescens, Ephedra viridis, Gutierrezia sarothrae, Purshia mexicana</i>, and <i>Purshia tridentata</i>. Because of disturbance, the herbaceous layer often has moderately high cover and is dominated by exotic <i>Bromus tectorum</i> with other weedy species such as <i>Lappula occidentalis, Machaeranthera canescens</i>, and <i>Salsola tragus</i>. Other species usually present with low to moderate cover include native grasses <i>Bouteloua gracilis, Elymus trachycaulus, Leymus salinus, Muhlenbergia asperifolia</i>, and <i>Poa fendleriana</i>. <i>Pinus edulis</i> and <i>Juniperus osteosperma</i> trees may have low cover on the margins of the community. Total vegetation cover in these disturbed shrublands ranges from 9 to 52%. Stands occur on disturbed sites on mesatops, ridges, canyon bottoms, basins, and along intermittent streams between 1522 and 2258 m elevation. Sites are flat to gently sloping with west and northwest aspects. Soils are sands and silt loams derived from alluvial or eolian deposits, from shales or sandstones.
