Description: This ruderal scrub herbaceous association is known from Glen Canyon National Recreation Area but occurs more widely in the interior western U.S. It is characterized by sparse cover of <i>Tamarix chinensis</i> with generally less than 3% cover. Associated shrubs with sparse to very low cover may include <i>Atriplex confertifolia, Baccharis salicina</i>, and <i>Gutierrezia sarothrae</i>. The herbaceous layer has low to moderate cover and is dominated by one or more of the following exotic annual species: <i>Bromus rubens</i> (with up to 6% cover), <i>Bromus tectorum, Schismus barbatus</i>, and <i>Salsola tragus</i>, and/or the weedy native, perennial species such as <i>Mentzelia multiflora, Bassia americana, Rumex maritimus</i>, and <i>Stephanomeria pauciflora</i>. Stands occur on plateaus, bajadas, canyon sides, canyon or valley floors, drainage channels, beaches that occur along the shores of reservoirs and is a result flood disturbance regime of continually fluctuating lake levels. Elevations are between 1090 and 1187 m. Sites range from flat to steeply sloping and occur on all aspects. Bare soil, sand, and bedrock cover most of the unvegetated surface, with lesser cover of gravel, large rocks, and litter. Soils are variable and include silty clay loams, silt loams, loamy sands, and sands derived from alluvial or talus/colluvial deposits, shales or sandstones
