Description: This rare mixed shrubland association is known from Glen Canyon National Recreation Area and may occur more widely in the Colorado Plateau. It is characterized by a mixed shrub canopy dominated by <i>Polygala acanthoclada</i> (with 3-7% cover) with either or both of <i>Coleogyne ramosissima</i> (with 2-6% cover) and <i>Ephedra torreyana</i> (with 1-2% cover) codominant. Other associated shrubs with sparse to very low cover may include <i>Atriplex confertifolia, Gutierrezia sarothrae, Psorothamnus fremontii</i>, and <i>Rhus trilobata</i>. If present, the herbaceous layer has sparse to low cover and may include <i>Achnatherum hymenoides, Aristida purpurea</i>, and <i>Phacelia crenulata</i>. Total cover ranges from 7 to 23%. Stands occur on flat to gently sloping canyon benches and canyon bottoms with southwest to northwest aspects. Elevations range from 1167 to 1397 m. Bedrock and bare soil cover most of the unvegetated surface. Soils are derived from shales or sandstones.
