Name: Populus fremontii / Frangula betulifolia - Quercus gambelii Spring & Riparian Woodland
Reference: NatureServe Biotics 2019
Description: This riparian cottonwood community occurs on slope-springs and riparian areas where deep alluvial soils can accommodate cottonwood phreatophytic roots. It is characterized by an overstory canopy of tall cottonwood, willows and/or box-elders which are structurally striking, but can be very low in cover, sometimes <10%, but may be up to 75%. The shrub layer is characteristically fairly dense with a moderate to high cover of Quercus gambelii, Frangula betulifolia, and/or Rhus trilobata. Herbaceous cover can be minimal or lush. Other tree species present may include Juniperus osteosperma, Salix gooddingii, Salix amygdaloides, and Acer negundo. This association is located in desert of the southwestern U.S., canyons of southern Utah, and on the central Colorado Plateau and is likely to be found in northern Arizona.
