Description: These open and often wind-sheared stands of <i>Pinus torreyana ssp. insularis</i> are found on coastal slopes with northerly aspects, and are limited to Santa Rosa Island. The vegetation forms an open to patchy tree layer with a sparse to open shrub layer and sparse to open herbaceous understory. The dominant tree is <i>Pinus torreyana ssp. insularis</i> in the overstory. In one stand, <i>Quercus agrifolia</i> shares the canopy. Shrubs that are characteristic or often present include <i>Lotus dendroideus var. dendroideus, Arctostaphylos confertiflora, Heteromeles arbutifolia, Diplacus parviflorus, Baccharis pilularis, Eriophyllum confertiflorum var. confertiflorum, Quercus pacifica</i>, and <i>Rhus integrifolia</i>. It occurs near the shore and up to 140 m in elevation.
