Name: Spergularia macrotheca - Hordeum murinum Vernal Pool
Reference: NatureServe Biotics 2019
Description: This association is characterized by an open to patchy herbaceous layer of Spergularia macrotheca, Avena spp., Bromus hordeaceus, and Hordeum murinum. The overall herbaceous cover ranges from 7 to 65%. The association is found primarily at the bottom of slopes, and are usually flat. Soils are derived from a variety of substrates but primarily sandstone, shale, siltstone, conglomerate, and breccia that is moderately to well-consolidated. Soil textures are fine clay, causing vernal pools. Elevations range from approximately 80 to 260 m. These are naturally occurring, drying, saline and alkaline vernal pools that tend to have higher species diversity than the vegetation found around man-made ponds also present on Santa Rosa Island.
