Name: (Buddleja utahensis, Eriogonum heermannii) - Gutierrezia spp. Limestone Scrub
Reference: NatureServe Biotics 2019
Description: This association is found in the southern Great Basin in California where it forms an open shrub canopy (3-13% cover) that is characterized by the presence of Eriogonum fasciculatum with Buddleja utahensis, Eriogonum heermannii, and/or Gutierrezia microcephala dominant or codominant. It also occurs scattered in other limestone-rich, rocky areas of the eastern Mojave Desert of California. Other shrubs may be present, including Brickellia microphylla, Echinocactus polycephalus, Prunus fasciculata, and Scopulophila rixfordii. Herbaceous cover is generally sparse and ranges from 0.2 to 9% with common associated species Achnatherum speciosum, Aristida purpurea, and exotic Bromus rubens. Occasional emergent Yucca brevifolia trees may be present with up to 0.5% cover. Biological soil crusts are often present and are composed of lichens and mosses. Stands occur scattered along steep, calcareous bedrock areas at mid to upper elevations (950-1900 m). Sites are found primarily on midslopes with somewhat steep to very steep (17-65°) slopes on cooler northwesterly to easterly aspects. Soils are usually sandy loams derived from sedimentary substrates, such as limestone and dolomite.
