This desert wash association is found in the Mojave Desert in Arizona, California, and southern Nevada. It is characterized by an open shrub canopy (9-31% cover) that is codominated by Acacia greggii and Viguiera parishii with Larrea tridentata often present. Additional indicator species include Ephedra viridis, Ferocactus cylindraceus, Thamnosma montana, and Yucca schidigera. Other shrub associates may include Cylindropuntia acanthocarpa, Echinocereus engelmannii, Ephedra nevadensis, Eriogonum fasciculatum, Gutierrezia sarothrae, Phoradendron californicum, Psilostrophe cooperi, Salvia dorrii, and Stephanomeria pauciflora. Herbaceous cover is generally low but variable, ranging from 1 to 78% cover. Commonly associated herbs include Eriogonum inflatum, Dasyochloa pulchella, Penstemon palmeri, Sphaeralcea ambigua, and invasive exotics Bromus rubens and Erodium cicutarium. Stands are found at mid to upper elevations (550-1450 m) primarily in drainage channels, arroyos and adjacent canyon sideslopes. Slopes are generally gentle to moderate (2-37°) with variable aspects. Substrates are rocky alluvial soils with high gravel and cobble content and variable-textured soils (sands, sandy loams, and clay) derived from a variety of substrates such as alkali-granite (alaskite), basalt, gneiss, granodiorite, limestone, and rhyolite.
