Name: Ambrosia dumosa - Ephedra torreyana - (Psorothamnus fremontii) Desert Dwarf Scrub
Reference: NatureServe Biotics 2019
Description: This association is currently described only from the Mojave Desert Network. Additional global information will be added as it becomes available. It is found in Lake Mead National Recreation Area in Nevada, sampled at low to mid elevations in both Calville and Echo Bay areas. It is found primarily along alluvial fans and low-level valleys, as well as on the flat tops of interfluvial ridges, with primarily gentle slopes (though with a range of 1-24°), and on variable aspects. Elevation ranges from approximately 550 to 1200 m, and averages 760 m. Soils are typically alluvium derived from red sandstone often with gypsum sediment. Vegetation forms an open shrub canopy in which the shrub cover ranges from 7 to 16% and averages 10%. An emergent tree layer is absent, and the herb understory is variable and ranges from 0 to 15% cover. Ambrosia dumosa is dominant in the shrub canopy, and Ephedra torreyana is characteristic along with Krameria erecta. Other shrubs often present include Psorothamnus fremontii, Acacia greggii, Amphipappus fremontii, and Larrea tridentata. Commonly associated herbs include Bromus rubens, Pleuraphis rigida, and Schismus spp. Nonvascular plants are often present, including cryptogamic crust.
