Name: Amphipappus fremontii (Limestone) Shrubland
Reference: NatureServe Biotics 2019
Description: This shrubland association occurs in the southern Great Basin of California and is characterized by an open shrub canopy (6-19% cover) that is dominated by Amphipappus fremontii with Atriplex confertifolia and Echinocactus polycephalus present to codominant. Other common shrubs often present include Ambrosia dumosa, Brickellia microphylla, Ephedra nevadensis, Eriogonum fasciculatum, and Lepidium fremontii. Herbaceous cover is typically sparse and ranges up to 10% cover with associates Gilia spp. and Xylorhiza tortifolia. Cryptogamic crust, lichens, and mosses are also common. Occasional emergent trees may be present. Stands are found on limestone outcroppings and ridges at mid to upper elevations (895-1530 m). Sites occur on somewhat steep to steep slopes (15-38°) on variable aspects and slope positions. The soils are calcareous with variable soil textures ranging from clay loam to sand and are derived primarily from limestone and dolostone.
